Reporting
In addition to our mapping, New Neighbors Network has capacity to undertake bespoke research projects, again using the tools of journalism to answer questions your organization seeks answers to.
In 2022 we undertook two studies in Guatemala that assisted non-profits in removing obstacles from projects they were engaged with. One involved studying coffee cooperatives, partnering with the Cambridge, Mass.-based Root Capital which sought assistance sharpening their message at a time when many of their most enduring projects in Guatemala’s Mayan highlands were losing personnel to US-bound migration.
A second assignment in Guatemala was done for a subcontractor of the Open Society Foundations, which sought to recruit Mayan-speaking researchers to gauge the impact social media influencers have on young migrants’ decisions to leave their country. These two projects dovetailed with work Joel Millman completed as a UN consultant that year. These were not extensive assignments, but they are examples of what a single reporter on the ground can learn and communicate to a client, and at a very modest cost.
